When our Year 5 students were asked what problem, affecting their town, they would like to change they came up with an answer and a solution!
The class exercised their democratic right by writing letters to the the local shire council asking for unsightly rubbish on Bussell Highway to be cleaned up. They have also offered to remove the rubbish themselves.
Yr 5 teacher, Lindsay Burke said that, as a part of the HAAS (The Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences) module – ‘Civics and Citizenship’, the students’ letters will be sent to the shire requesting the possibility of slowing down the traffic on Bussell Highway for one day so the children can pick up the rubbish. He said the classroom task is integral in teaching students to have a voice and take a role as citizens and community members.
