The transition into a large high school can be a daunting time for young people…. this was the topic Year 6 MRIS student Chiara Falls addressed in a letter to the Hon Sue Ellery MLC as part of the class’s persuasive text unit. In the letter, Chiara reasoned that another High School could solve this problem and many others. A glowing response from the Minister for Education and Training arrived last week with the Minister saying she was “impressed with Chiara’s knowledge and in particular how she articulated the argument for an additional secondary school in the Margaret River area.” “I see this as testament to the quality of education being delivered at your primary school” Ms Ellery said. Year 6 Teacher, Laura Nicholls said her students honed their persuasive writing skills by choosing a subject they were passionate about and writing a letter to the dignitaries responsible for these areas. Topics included: the environment, the need for indigenous lessons in all schools; climate change; smoking and addressing skate park vandalism. “Like Minister Ellery, I am so proud of how professional, respectful and knowledgeable they all were about their subject areas,” Laura said.
